BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

BFT welding and fabrication repair in Fort Worth typically runs $350 to $950 installed, depending on whether we’re rebuilding a hinge mount, straightening a bent gate frame, or fabricating a new bracket assembly. We stock BFT-compatible steel, hinge plates, and mounting hardware on our trucks, and most welding repairs are completed in a single visit. The usual story we hear: the gate started dragging on the opener, or a weld popped with a sound like a rifle shot, and now the gate sits crooked on its track, fighting the motor every inch of the way.

Here’s the thing about BFT openers: they’re solid Italian engineering, but they can only work as hard as the steel they’re bolted to. When the fabrication underneath fails, the motor gets blamed for the symptom. In Fort Worth’s clay soil, gate posts shift seasonally, and that movement concentrates stress on hinge welds and bracket mounts until something gives. We fix the steel first, then set the opener back to factory travel limits so it stops overworking.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

We weld and fabricate for the full BFT residential and light-commercial range, including the Deimos, Phobos, Rigel, and Botticelli slide-gate lines, plus the Sub and Kustos swing-gate operators. The welding points on each are similar: motor mounting plates, rack brackets on slide gates, hinge post reinforcement on swing gates, and the occasional gate leaf repair where the steel itself has cracked or sagged.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners miss: BFT uses metric hardware throughout, and the bolt patterns on the motor baseplate differ between the Deimos and Phobos series even though the motors look nearly identical at a glance. The Deimos baseplate is 160mm wide at the mounting points; the Phobos runs 190mm. We match the bracket to the exact motor model on the nameplate before we cut or bend anything. Aftermarket steel is fine for the structural work, but we always use OEM-spec BFT fasteners and limit-switch brackets, because the tolerances on those parts are too tight for generic hardware.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate shudders or jerks when it opens. The motor is fighting a hinge that’s worn egg-shaped or a frame that’s racked out of square. The BFT opener compensates by pulsing torque, and that pulsing beats the mount welds until they crack.
  • You can see daylight between the hinge plate and the post. That’s a broken or stretched weld. The gate still hangs, but every open cycle levers the plate a little farther until the weld tears completely.
  • The gate leaf sits lower on one side than the other. The frame has twisted or the hinge post has leaned. In Fort Worth’s expanding clay, posts lean over a few wet-dry seasons if they weren’t set deep enough originally.
  • The opener runs but the gate barely moves, or the rack makes a grinding noise. On slide gates, the rack section has wallowed out at the bolt holes or the rack brackets have broken away from the gate frame. The motor rolls a pinion over a loose rack and chews both up.
  • You find fresh rust flakes under the hinge or motor mount. Steel under constant vibration sheds rust fast once a weld starts flexing. The rust is the first visible sign of a fatigue crack starting underneath.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Most BFT welding and fabrication repairs in Fort Worth land between $350 and $950 installed. A simple hinge plate replacement with field welding runs $350 to $500. Rebuilding a racked slide-gate frame or fabricating a new motor mounting bracket with reinforcement plate runs $550 to $800. A full gate leaf rebuild with new steel sections, hinge posts set and squared, and complete re-weld runs $950 and up, depending on gate length and steel gauge.

Every quote is given before work starts, and the price we quote is the price you pay. The number includes all steel, welding consumables, grinding and cleanup, alignment of the gate to the opener, and a full cycle test with the BFT motor under load. The work is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the weld doesn’t hold or the gate drifts out of square within ninety days, we come back and make it right, no charge, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself: look for visible cracks at the hinge welds, wiggle the gate by hand to see how much play is in the mounts, and check for rust staining around the motor baseplate. If the gate moves more than a quarter inch at the free end when you shake it, the welds are already working loose.

What you shouldn’t do is grind out and re-weld a BFT mount yourself. A gate leaf under tension stores a lot of energy, and a weld that lets go while someone’s underneath is a serious injury waiting. The repair also needs to be square within a sixteenth of an inch or the opener will bind and burn out the board over time. That is not a first-time welder’s job. If you’re seeing cracks, call us at (817) 562-7979. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a same-day fix or a scheduled fabrication.
